Names you may see: L glutathione reduced glutathione GSH oxidized glutathione GSSG liposomal glutathione

The quick take

Glutathione is a small molecule made from three amino acids. The body produces it for antioxidant defence and other cellular functions.

A closer look

What forms will I see on a label?

Labels may list reduced L-glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG) or a liposomal preparation. NAC is a precursor used by the body, not the same ingredient as glutathione.

Why people use it

People choose glutathione for antioxidant, skin-appearance and general wellness goals. Brands also promote it for liver and detoxification support.

These are common goals and marketing uses. The evidence section below explains what research supports.

What does the evidence tell us?

Human trials have examined glutathione status, oxidative-stress markers and skin measures, but findings vary with the preparation and study. Biomarker or cosmetic changes do not prove broad detoxification, disease-prevention or athletic benefits.

What should I know before using it?

Use products intended for oral use as directed. Research is limited for long-term use and during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Discuss antioxidant supplements with the clinician managing any cancer treatment.
