The quick take

Beet root supplies dietary nitrate, which the body can convert into nitric oxide.

A closer look

What forms will I see on a label?

Juice, concentrates and powders vary in nitrate content. Total beet-powder weight does not tell you how much nitrate a serving supplies.

Why people use it

Athletes use it for endurance, exercise efficiency and blood-flow or pump goals.

These are common goals and marketing uses. The evidence section below explains what research supports.

What does the evidence tell us?

Nitrate-rich beet juice can improve some endurance outcomes, especially in recreational exercisers. Results vary, and an ordinary beet powder cannot be assumed to match a studied juice or concentrate.

What should I know before using it?

Beets can turn urine or stools pink or red. Long-term high-dose supplement use is less studied. Discuss concentrated products with a clinician if you have relevant medical conditions or take medicines.
