A closer look
What forms will I see on a label?
Labels may list gamma-aminobutyric acid or fermented GABA. Oral GABA is not the same as prescription medicines that act on GABA receptors.
Why people use it
People use it for relaxation, stress and sleep goals.
These are common goals and marketing uses. The evidence section below explains what research supports.
What does the evidence tell us?
A systematic review found limited evidence for stress benefits and very limited evidence for sleep benefits. The role of GABA in the brain does not prove that an oral supplement has the same effects.
What should I know before using it?
GABA may lower blood pressure, so check with a clinician if taking blood-pressure medicines. Safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding are lacking.
