The quick take
Melatonin is a hormone involved in signalling the timing of the sleep-wake cycle.
A closer look
What forms will I see on a label?
Products include immediate-release and extended-release forms. Amount, timing and formulation all matter; a higher amount is not automatically more effective.
Why people use it
People choose melatonin for jet lag, shifted sleep schedules and difficulty falling asleep.
These are common goals and marketing uses. The evidence section below explains what research supports.
What does the evidence tell us?
Evidence is stronger for some circadian-timing problems than for chronic insomnia in general. It should not replace assessment of persistent sleep difficulties.
What should I know before using it?
It can cause drowsiness, headache or dizziness. Avoid driving when affected. Seek professional advice for children, pregnancy, breastfeeding or use with medicines; long-term safety is less certain.
