Names you may see: probiotic Lactobacillus Bifidobacterium Saccharomyces boulardii CFU strains
The quick take
Probiotics are live microorganisms used with the aim of providing a health benefit. This is a family of ingredients, not one interchangeable substance.
A closer look
What forms will I see on a label?
Look for the genus, species and strain, plus the viable count and storage directions. More CFUs or more strains does not automatically mean a better product.
Why people use it
People choose probiotics for digestive comfort, regularity and support during or after antibiotic use. The intended use should match evidence for the particular strain or combination.
These are common goals and marketing uses. The evidence section below explains what research supports.
What does the evidence tell us?
Benefits are strain- and condition-specific. Results from one organism or formula cannot be applied to every probiotic, and many marketed uses still lack strong evidence.
What should I know before using it?
Gas or bloating can occur. People who are seriously ill or immunocompromised should seek medical advice because rare serious infections are possible.
