Type I Collagen is the most abundant collagen in the body. It is found in skin, tendon, vascular ligature, organs, bone, teeth, artery walls and much more. Our bone and tendon are comprised of 98% type I collagen, and our skin is comprised of approximately 70-80% type I collagen. Type II Collagen makes up for 50% of all cartilage protein and is also found in space between lens and retina of the eye.
Type I Collagen supplementation is usually intended to maintain skin health and fight against visible signs of aging. Type II Collagen supplementation is usually for joint pain relief.
With age, skin cells that make collagen become less activated and replaced at a significantly slower rate. This disrupts the skin structural network, making our skin less hydrated, thinner and wrinkled. Bone turnover is also disrupted, with bone density loss exceeding bone formation. Collagen also plays an important role in cross-linking and strengthening bone structure. Abnormalities in collagen production could increase the risk of clinical disorders such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
Collagen peptides are small bioactive peptides obtained by breaking down collagen protein to a molecular weight of around 5,000Da from collagen protein 300-400kDa in size. This hydrolysis makes collagen much more bioactive, easily digestible and ready to be absorbed by the body.
