Casein Protein

Names you may see: micellar casein calcium caseinate milk protein

The quick take

Casein is a milk protein commonly used in powders and protein blends.

A closer look

What forms will I see on a label?

Labels may list micellar casein or caseinates. Check the full ingredients and protein amount rather than assuming all milk-protein blends are the same.

Why people use it

People choose casein to meet protein needs, often in an evening shake because it is associated with slower digestion.

These are common goals and marketing uses. The evidence section below explains what research supports.

What does the evidence tell us?

Pre-sleep protein has been studied, but timing alone does not guarantee better results. A small trial in trained adults found no clear advantage for evening over morning casein.

What should I know before using it?

Avoid with milk-protein allergy. Check lactose and other ingredients, and seek advice if you have a medically restricted protein intake.
